Elections and Campaigns
How did the American presidential election system evolve from a merit based non-partisan system, from the time of George Washington, into a candidate-centered form of politics? Be sure to explain how campaign norms changed, when they changed, and what they became in the age of Jackson. Also describe what candidate-centered politics is, and how the campaign of William Henry Harrison was unique. Finally, be sure to mention how the presidential nomination system evolved, especially with regard to the role that parties and primaries began to play.
Ties.
What caused the Jefferson-Burr tie in 1800, and why was the 12th Amendment needed to fix that? Furthermore, assume that there is a tied presidential election today between Trump and Biden (neither obtains a majority of the electoral college). Describe how the US system resolves this tie. What steps take place? Can the candidates also tie during the tie-breaking process, why or why not? Be sure to explain how the system handles ties not only for the president, but vice-president as well.
